The Suburban Ecovillage Project is in the earliest stage of development.  The Bethel Suburban Ecovillage, in Eugene, Oregon, is the charter community.  If you are interested in launching a Suburban Ecovillage Initiative in your area, please get in touch!  We can add a link to your website or provide you with a simple web page here.

The goals and objectives of individual Suburban Ecovillages will be determined by their members.  However, the Suburban Ecovillage Project has established minimal parameters for participation

The goals of the Suburban Ecovillage Project are:

  • To encourage community and cooperative ventures in both suburban and urban residential neighborhoods.
  • Develop more sustainable ways to live in the suburbs and urban residential neighborhoods..
  • To act as a clearing house and networking resource for anyone who wants to do the same in their suburban (or urban) neighborhood, whether they call it a suburban ecovillage or not.

The Suburban Ecovillage concept is to blend the best aspects of intentional community with established concepts of private ownership and autonomy, transforming the American Suburb into a livable, human environment.

A Suburban Ecovillage is comprised of privately owned households within a defined geographical area.

Each member of the community participates "in community" at whatever level feels comfortable.  Individual community members come together around their common interests while respecting one another's differences and private space.

The focus of the Project is on Community Building, Cooperative Ventures and retrofitting existing properties into more environmentally friendly habitats, using the time-tested concepts of ecological design.

Suburban Ecovillages may purchase, rent or otherwise obtain "community" spaces, land or buildings for use as a community center, with meeting rooms, a kitchen, workshops, guest rooms, parking for community-shared vehicles, tool/equipment inventory, etc.  The means by which these facilities are obtained and maintained is up to the individual ecovillage--but the rest of us would love to hear about how you did it!

We share our experiences and hope others will share theirs, so we can all benefit.  If you would like to join us, drop us a note.
