The members of each Suburban Ecovillage determine their own organization, priorities and methods.  However, basic precepts must be honored in order for a community to identify itself with the Suburban Ecovillage Project, as follows:

  • A Suburban Ecovillage does not discriminate against prospective participants because of race, color, national/ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual identity/orientation or disability.
  • A Suburban Ecovillage does not countenance physical, verbal or emotional violence.  The means by which each ecovillage addresses these issues will be determined by the community.  (In time, we hope the network of villages will develop a body of experience and effective solutions that we can share here.  If you are aware of a good website that addresses this issue, please contact us.)
  • A Suburban Ecovillage does not coerce members to be "more sustainable" or set minimum requirements for membership.  The goal of sustainability is not served by exclusion but by inclusion.  Ecovillagers respect each member's right to progress in ecological knowledge and action at his or her own pace.  Members with lower carbon footprints may model sustainable behaviors and share information with those who express an interest.
  • Each member of the community will participate "in community" at whatever level feels comfortable.  Community members will come together around their common interests while respecting one another's differences and private space.  No coercion may be used to force participation or pay dues or fees.  However, Suburban Ecovillage organizations may develop tiered levels of membership based on participation and/or payment of dues or fees.
